[밸류체인타임스=서반석 인재기자] People love Rival relationships: Japan and S.Korea, Messi and Ronaldo in soccer, Apple and Samsung in the electric devices industry, Lebron James and Stephen Curry in basketball. They are the most famous rivals in the world. Rival relationships exist regardless of the genre. So it is not easy to pick a particular competition. However, the most entertaining competitors are Nike and Adidas. This competition is not limited to the sportswear industry. Nike and Adidas were supported by soccer rivals Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Nike’s rivalry with Adidas, as well as soccer, has a long history and continues.

Adidas has a history of more than 100 years. With Nike’s over 60 years of history, you can see that Nike and Adidas were not rivals initially. At that time period, Adidas was dominant in the sportswear industry. And Nike has just started their own business. However, in the 1970s, Nike grew rapidly through the jogging craze. In the 1980s, Nike grew enough to compete against Adidas. And with the success of the Jordan series, Nike took the throne from Adidas. Until now, Nike is only in the sports apparel industry. The situation in Adidas was terrible. After Nike taking over the throne, Adidas took a backseat to New Balance and Asics but recently announced the start of a rebound through collaboration with Gucci and Balenciaga and the re-launch of Yeezys.

The essential factor that led Nike to the first status is marketing. At the time of Nike’s establishment, the plan was simple marketing like collaboration with Jordan. However, as the 21st century began, Nike changed its marketing plan to resale. Nike gave each shoe a story and value and made the product rare with the value of ‘limited edition.’ Through this marketing plan, Nike shoes were priced at a high price. People praised Nike. Like Nike, Adidas released a limited edition. However, they have changed again to unlimited. People are dissatisfied with Adidas. To overcome this situation, unlike Nike, Adidas released Yeezy Boost at a low price to stimulate consumption.

Performance is an essential word in the sportswear industry. Adidas founder Adolf Dassler shows how passionate Adidas is about performance. The same goes for Nike. Among the running shoes of 8 sports brands, including Adidas, Nike's 'Legend React 2' running shoes showed the best performance. Nike was excellent in slip resistance and sole pressure. Adidas' 'Equipment 10 em' showed strength in knee fatigue. Like the biggest beneficiary of the 1970 running boom, Nike’s running shoes drew praise from experts. But when it comes to soccer shoes, Adidas is ahead of Nike. As of 2018, Adidas soccer shoes ranked 1st to 3rd as the world's largest soccer shoe model. Adidas also made remarkable strides in the soccer shoe market, recording 40.4% of Nike's 36%.

The competition between Nike and Adidas is a representative rival in the sports-apparel industry. Nike's market capitalization is almost twice as expensive as Adidas, but the sportswear industry is changing every time, so Adidas is not hopeless. Adidas is still looking for its way. They learned a lot from Nike. Nike does not sell only shoes but their stories and histories. Even the great marketer, Apple’s Steve Jobs, praised Nike's marketing. The most significant difference between Nike and Adidas is marketing. Nike's marketing has become a bible for all industrial marketing beyond the sportswear industry and has raised its ransom through marketing. Adidas, on the other hand, was utterly defeated by Nike in marketing. Someday, can Adidas compete on an equal footing with Nike?
