George Washington leading America independent, Thomas Edison giving a new light called the light bulb to the earth, and Steve Jobs revolutionizing the Electronics industry with a simple design and good performance. These are now gone; however, their achievements lead our world. And now in 2022, one person is beyond changing, leading the world, and creating the future. Elon Musk, in 2022, is the wealthiest person in the world and the first person in human history to exceed $300 billion in personal wealth.
In 1971, Elon Musk was born in Pretoria, the capital city of the Republic of South Africa. Since he was little, he liked to read books. When he was 12, Elon taught himself a computer, developed a game himself, and sold it for $500. He had an unusual personality and was always bullied. In the high school, he passed out because of bullying. After that, he went to Canada from South Africa to study, and then entered Pennsylvania State University as a scholarship student. In 1995, he entered Stanford Graduate School in the United States.
A new wave was blowing in America in 1995. Bill Gates built Windows 95, and in 1998 Larry Page attending Stanford Graduate School the same as Elon founded Google. The Internet Wave gets bigger and bigger. Elon dropped out of the graduate school at the age of 24 and started Zip2, a software company related to Internet addresses, with his younger brother. He sold Zip2 for $320 million to Compaq Computer. He owned about 7% of the stake in Zip2, making about $26 billion from the sale of the company. With this capital, Elon Musk and Max Levchin founded the e-commerce PayPal. Many large companies eyed PayPal. The winner was eBay. After acquiring PayPal, Elon earned about $576 million.
In 2002, with money earned from selling PayPal, Elon started SpaceX to make his dream, Mars migration. Aerospace companies and research institutes were government-affiliated institutions with government investment and guidance. Elon broke the rule of aerospace industries controlled by the government. With Musk's SpaceX, which lacked neither technology nor money, without government support, people say SpaceX's success would be impossible. SpaceX formed a rivalry with Blue Origin started in 2000 by the CEO of Amazon, Jeffrey Bezos.
With the start of SpaceX, Elon invested in Tesla founded by Eberhard. Musk's previous history of developing Zip2 and PayPal drew many people's expectations. However, Roadster, Tesla’s first electric sports car, had difficulties in making, and the release continued to be delayed. To make matters worse, in 2005, SpaceX’s first rocket Falcon 1 Failed to launch twice. In 2006 and 2007, SpaceX kept launching the rockets, but they failed every time. In 2018, Tesla became a profitable company as it succeeded in mass production of the Model 3. In 2020, Tesla ranked first in the global automobile market capitalization and ranked sixth in the global company market capitalization. Also, they ranked first in the automobile market share. In 2021, Tesla became the first automaker to cross the $1 trillion market cap.
Elon Musk’s innovation just started. He made STARLINK, which could provide wifi everywhere you go through thousands of satellites. This service will be completed in 2024. Also, he's in charge of the hyperloop. The target speed is 795.6 miles. If the hyperloop developed successfully from San Francisco to Los Angeles, it would take 30 minutes to speed faster than generally 6 hours by car. Elon Musk said his next invention will be an electric airplane. Elon Musk's ultimate goal is to move 1 million people to Mars by 2050. Just as Edison's light bulb lit each house in the world, the future created by Elon Musk also will settle in our lives.
