[밸류체인타임스=이소율 칼럼니스트] 우리는 일상생활 속에서 “물가가 올랐다”는 말을 자주 접한다. 편의점, 마트에서 사 먹던 과자 가격이 오르고, 즐겨 찾던 분식점이나 배달 음식도 어느새 부담스럽게 느껴진다. 이처럼 여러 상품과 서비스의 가격이 전반적으로 오르는 현상을 ‘물가 상승’이라고 한다. 그렇다면 물가는 왜 계속 오르는 것일까.
첫 번째 이유는 물건을 생산하는 데 드는 비용이 증가하기 때문이다. 기업이 상품을 만들기 위해서는 원재료비, 전기요금, 운송비, 인건비 등 다양한 비용이 필요하다. 만약 원재료 가격이나 인건비가 오르면, 기업은 손해를 보지 않기 위해 상품 가격을 인상할 수밖에 없다. 예를 들어 밀 가격이 상승하면 빵, 라면, 과자처럼 밀을 원료로 하는 식품들의 가격도 함께 오르게 된다.
두 번째 이유는 소비가 늘어날 때 발생하는 수요 증가다. 사람들이 물건을 더 많이 사려 하면 수요는 늘어나지만, 공급이 그만큼 따라오지 못할 경우 물건은 부족해진다. 이때 가격은 자연스럽게 상승한다. 인기 있는 한정판 굿즈나 콘서트 티켓 가격이 비싸지는 것도 수요가 공급을 초과하기 때문이다.
세 번째는 국제 경제 상황의 영향이다. 우리나라는 석유, 곡물처럼 생활과 산업에 중요한 자원을 해외에 의존하는 경우가 많다. 전쟁, 자연재해, 국제 분쟁 등이 발생하면 수입 과정에 차질이 생기고, 그 결과 원자재 가격이 오르게 된다. 이러한 변화는 결국 국내 물가에도 영향을 미친다.
물가 상승은 용돈이나 생활비 부담을 키워 우리 생활을 어렵게 만들 수 있다. 그러나 그 원인을 이해하면 경제가 어떻게 움직이는지 파악할 수 있고, 뉴스나 사회 현상을 바라보는 시야도 넓어질 수 있다. 물가에 관심을 갖는 일은 경제를 이해하는 첫걸음이라 할 수 있다.
